Bill Sadler - Honest & Elegant Artistry

Matt is one of the best in the world. He knows the ins and outs of all styles of vintage horns and how to get them to play their best. My Martin Committee III tenor has never felt better.

Matt is honest, forthright, and worth the wait. You will not believe how easily your horn plays and responds. You want easy-mode on sax? Have Matt work on it.

I studied instrument repair and have seen examples from all the big names out there. Matt is one of two people i would trust to work on my horns. Hes that good.

Do yourself a favor, and book the overhaul today. Youll be eternally grateful you did.

Timm - Matt…you are an American Classic!

Matt, frankly it took me 3 years to have my ‘37 6M Naked Lady on you project list and my gosh it was worth the wait! In a throw away world your classic skills for keeping America’s art forms alive truly starts with having the proper instruments to do so. That’s where you are truly an “American Classic” with your hands on skills, craftsmanship, and compassions for the instruments you take in and what you deliver is priceless! Lastly, your honesty and precise confidence for what you do is P.R.I.C.E.L.E.S.S thus you are a true artist! Now I can play a classic piece of Americana for the next millennium! Maximum Appreciation…Timm

Todd Leary - Giving a classic new life

I bought a 94,XXX Selmer Mark VI tenor from a good friend and player about 4 years ago. Even though it needed work, it played enough to see there was a lot of potential! I had it overhauled and it just didn’t come out the way I imagined it would. I’d go back to it every couple of weeks but it didn’t get any better. I was thinking about selling it.

I had been watching Matt’s YouTube videos for a while and I was always fascinated. I called Matt in 2021 and he spent a time listening to my horn’s story. He suggested some potential causes for what I was experiencing and I could tell that he had the skill and experience to do a great job on my horn. We were able to schedule a time - it took a while because Matt always has work in his queue.

Well, I just received my horn back from Matt and it plays better than I was hoping for! Great action, terrific consistency of tone, excellent intonation. Matt did what he always does, a meticulous job. I feel extremely lucky to be one of Matt’s very satisfied customers.

Ted Nelson - SOOOO Nice

Two years ago, I found you through our mutual friend Brian. I worked some trades with Brian and wound up with a King Super 20 (full pearls, Series II) and a Conn 30M. You did your magic, I picked them up one day and drove back over to Brian’s. Play testing your work side by side on the 30M on which I had another high-end overhaul was telling. The 30M you worked on was more spot on in intonation. The sound quality of the notes was more consistent. And the action was so buttery smooth and light. What a joy to play!

Fast forward two years: moved to Florida for work, finding a house and settling into a new job, finding other players. Takes time. Finally found time, unpacked the 30M and the Super 20 as well as a couple other horns with high-end overhauls. Playing them all side by side was telling. Like a lot of folks, I go for the sonics of vintage horns, but the mechanics can be pretty wearing compared to newer horns. Not the 30M and Super 20! Playing them was SOOOO Nice!! Sonics plus ease of playability. WOW. Knocked my socks off. Thank you, Matt. Spectacular work!

Luis Pinheiro - Regained a family member

I thought I’d start the year acknowledging something good and you came right in mind.

You don’t remember me, but about 6 years ago I had a old conn tenor sax overhauled by you. I was quick sick and wasn’t able to play test it. Then, a kid came along, then graduate school came along and you can imagine the rest…

This past weekend was the first time I actually got to play that sax. It was always the back up of the back up horn and I barely played it, probably because I didn’t think the quality was good enough but mostly because it was such an unwieldy horny. It always felt out of sync, unbalanced and obtrusive. It never felt comfortable to play or sounded good.

Last weekend I gave it a try, with a 6 year old overhaul done by you and I must say it almost brought me to tears. That sax is pretty old (there’s an 1918 inscription on it). It played like butter and I was amazed at how jovial, alive, bright and aggressive it sounded, even for a non-pro horn. I can’t stop playing it now.

So, long story short, thanks for this. Really. I’m really, really enjoying playing this sax. From years of neglect inside my storage, it’s a horn that can’t seem to leave my living room. I felt as if I have regained another child.

Best wishes for you and your family in 2018. Keep up the awesome work!

Glenn Choy - Balanced Action overhaul

Matt overhauled my Balanced Action 24xxx tenor. It came back literally a different horn. The sound is rich and deep and response is quick. The low B flat comes out effortlessly. The action is precise and smooth and silent - really like a new horn, but it has the old rich sound, an ultimate combination.

Matt is great to work with. Communication is open. He is precise and careful and thorough and it shows in the horn. He’s a true craftsperson.

Darin J. Esterly, GCCWS Music Dept. Asst. - 1960 Super 20 Alto

I play a Super 20 Alto or Tenor daily. Matt just completed a full overhaul on my Series Three Super 20 Alto. I’ll have a hard time describing the amazing difference here in this review. Everything written before me is absolutely true. The horn is a completely different horn for the better. Like Matt says “Better than new from the factory”. I imagine this is how King wanted all their horns to be! It feels perfect under the fingers, easy to play top to bottom. The mechanical setup is perfection. The intonation as a result is perfect, spot on. There are no hesitations in achieving any timbre or attack. It is the easiest blowing horn I own, using the same mouthpiece/reed combination as before. Matt’s pad work is exquisite. You should fully trust Matt in his advice for pad and resonator choice. I have heard him play, he knows what sounds good. But he also is a great listener in order to fulfill the customer’s wishes. As a result of Matt’s work my playing has gained some confidence. I feel like I’m driving a Formula 1 race car to the supermarket!

I play weekly in a traditional low key church setting as well as a full out contemporary worship band with a R & B horn section. A horn this well set up makes that transition very easy. The only problem is now all my other horns seem slighty sloppy in contrast! No one else will touch my horns for anything major if I can help it. I wish Matt were closer for all the routine minor adjustments as well. It’s worth the wait, trust me! If everybody was this professional life would be so much easier! Outstanding job Matt, Thank you!

CJG - CONN 1933 Transitional 6M Alto Sax 254xxx

Apologies to Matt for the late review, but better late than never! I was lucky enough to hook up w/Matt back in May 2015, and asked him to help me find a great, easy-playing Alto from the days (couldn’t shell out the big bucks for a Mark VI). He happened to have just finished overhauling a CONN 1933 Transitional 6M Alto 254xxx, and told me it was a fantastic horn. When Matt tells you something, TRUST HIM! I did and bought it for $2550. BEST HORN BUY I EVER MADE!! What a great playing horn – what an amazing job he did putting it into perfect playing condition. Great SOUND, Great ACTION, Great INTONATION – I couldn’t be happier! I can’t guarantee you it plays better than a Mark VI – it may or may not… But, for me THIS HORN IS PERFECT! Thanks, Matt!!

Sam Bonanno - Mark VI overhaul

I just got back my Mark VI after Matt performed his magic. Before the overhaul the sax could best be described as tired. Very weak projection and sloppy action in the keys. Additionally, low B and B flat very difficult to play with any semblance of intonation. Other issues too numerous to mention in this forum. Prior to the overhaul Matt and I discussed going to metal resonators and kangaroo pads and he dissuaded me from both. The horn came back a monster. Horn has much greater projection yet still keeps that darker mellow tone that I love from the 6. Keys all pop with authority and at the risk of sounding glib, playing now feels like I am driving a Mercedes Benz as opposed to a 1962 Plymouth. Matt is a true professional. He is not only a master at his craft, he treats you with with respect, and gives you his undivided attention during any phone call when discussing any issue involving your sax. Lastly, if you are considering an overhaul, Matt is your guy. If you have to wait for his service, then wait. As a new customer I had to wait a year. It was worth it.

Doug O’Connor - Sterling Selmer SIII Alto Overhaul

Matt recently overhauled my sterling silver Series III Selmer Alto, which has seen several sets of expert hands, and he did a stellar, first-rate job. I’ve waited about 6 months to write this review to give it the credibility that it should have.

This horn had in some ways benefitted and in some ways suffered from experimentation (as one might expect) from other highly competent techs, so I decided to have Matt give it a crack while I was away in some military training. He listened carefully to what I was looking for, and was professional from start to finish.

There are glowing reviews of Matt’s work all over here, so I’ll focus on the job itself (from a player point of view): my alto was restored to a state in which I felt like I was fully responsible for what came out the other end of the horn, and where the saxophone played like itself. This is intended to be a high compliment. It involved no fancy resonators or pads. The key heights feel normal (they had previously been heightened to open up the sound, but at the cost of some facility: here I think the resonance stayed despite the correction). If you’re into stereo hifi, imagine that feeling when you hear a solid “reference” output, and I’ve been very pleased by that. From what I can tell, the work is concentrated on zero-gimmick, solid fundamental technician work: perfect mechanical action, excellent pad work. This is a horn I use exclusively for classical music, and I was also pleased to find it very responsive, alive, and not muffled as prior work with white Roo pads has done a little bit to my horns.

Speaking of which: the Series III alto for me is heavily on the homogenous-sounding side of the character spectrum, and especially in classical playing it can be easy to think things are “right” when it’s not hard to produce a stable, unoffensive, and controlled sound. In retrospect, I think some of this feeling of control comes from leaks, stuffiness, and mechanical underperformance. The other problem here, of course, is that with the confidence of the box comes the limitations of the box. So, this said, another part of the reason I waited to write this review is that I had to practice to get used to the heightened capabilities of what was essentially a new horn, a Series III I could really push in different directions, a horn ready to take on more variety of colors, more volume, more power. Like taming a wild stallion. As soon as I began playing on the newly overhauled horn, I felt like there was so much more I could do, and that I needed to practice a lot more to harness all of that. The sax is fundamentally more sensitive, responsive, and flexible in timbre than it was before, things which I greatly appreciate.

Matt and I were in Maryland All-State as high school kids, and it was a pleasure working with someone I’ve not only known for so long, but to be a part of his larger work in elevating the discipline of saxophone technical artistry. He’s not just another tech, he’s an incredibly intelligent, caring, and honest business-person, holding himself to an incredibly high professional standard. He is the quintessential saxophone nerd (but working out of an airstream, so it’s hipster-nerd), and believe me: this is what you want.

Tyler Young - The perfect blend of Art and Science

I’ve known and worked with Matt for about 6 years now, and I’ve taken all of my instruments to him. Matthew Stohrer is the most honest person I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with. He’s honest with the deals he does, the knowledge he graciously gives and with the painstaking amount of detail he puts into his work to make sure your saxophone is literally a different horn after he’s done with it. Come prepared with questions and come with an open mind, I learn something new every single time I visit his shop. In my opinion, Matt blends the Art of saxophone repair with cutting edge science beautifully. Matthew Stohrer is a veritable “Mechanic Mozart” of our time.

Charlie Kinzer - 1947 Selmer SBA Alto

Thanks to Matt for a masterful overhaul on a beautiful horn I thought was just plain “worn out.” Now that Matt has resurrected it, I find that the response is immediate and even, all the way up and down the scale. Every note is fully resonant, and the altissimo register pops. The intonation is much better than it ever was before. The detail work that he did is amazing. The keys are now perfectly fitted between posts, an issue that really needed attention, due in part to 70 years of playing and in part to the original process for the gold-plated finish back in the 1940s. I’m satisfied that this horn is now working way better than it ever did, even when new. The overhaul was a great investment. Matt’s work makes it possible for me to appreciate all over again the beautiful design and craftsmanship of the Selmer makers of long-gone days. Thanks for bringing this vintage instrument back to life. I look forward to playing it for many years to come!

James Scannell - Fantastic Super 20 Alto

I am extremely happy that I bought this saxophone from Stohrer music. I consider it money very well spent. The action is wonderfully snappy and the pinky table is the best I´ve experienced. I owned the very same model some time ago, but the feel and playability of my new horn is vastly superior thanks to Matt`s painstaking work and attention to detail. I have owned many horns over the years, but have never seen an instrument overhauled to this level. A saxophone in such great mechanical condition is a joy to behold! And to play! I only wish I had had such a great instrument earlier in my career. Doing business with Stohrer Music has been a real pleasure. Thank you Matt!

Codrin - Find-A-Sax

Matt’s outstanding workmanship and high quality standards are well documented (just read the customer reviews here and on SOTW) - I have nothing more to add to what’s already been said on these topics.

My post will be about his Find-A-Sax service.

I contacted Matt with my requirements (tonal & mechanical), a couple of horns in mind that I thought would fit the bill, and a rough budget. Matt took the time to give me his expertly qualified opinion on each of the horns and made a recommendation.

When the price (itemised) he quoted for the job exceeded the budget I had in mind, he helpfully recommended alternative sellers of good quality instruments with lower prices.

Having checked the competition, which indeed had lower prices but not by much, I decided to buy from Matt, knowing I’ll get the biggest bang for the buck.

Once I’d confirmed the order with a down payment, Matt set the wheels in motion and found a suitable horn, worked his magic on it and shipped it to me. The horn arrived to my door in Europe in 5 days in perfect shape, sitting tight in its case, smothered in bubble wrap and with the keys corked closed to avoid anything going out of regulation.

Throughout the process Matt kept me informed of the progress and everything went smoothly.

Not only do I recommend this service highly, I hope to employ it again soon for another horn.

emanuele cisi - an amazing 10M

I have a serious addiction to Conn 10M’s, I played many and I own several of them. I know that the key point that allows a modern professional player like I am, to use daily such an old kind of horn like that, is the setting. So I’m very careful and picky in the final setting, springs tension, action height, etc. Eveness and fluidity are the most important elements I need to feel under my fingers. I also learned in the years that an overhaul of a superior level, can make a huge difference on a horn, and can make it sing, whisper or scream like you have never imagined before. Even pitch can improve drastically! So, few months ago I decided to add a new lady to my small collection of 10M’s, and I bought blind eyes a beatiful horn, near mint, from Getasax. Matt did the overhaul and shipped the horn to NYC, where I was headed from Italy to play several gigs. So I traveled without tenor, knowing to have that unknown lady waiting for me in NY. Quite risky,in a way. Quickly…it resulted to be an amazing, incredible horn and from minute 1 I put my hands over, I felt totally at ease and ready to go to my gigs! The work Matt did on this tenor really surprised me - even if I was aware of his reknowned rputation - because it perfectly matched with my needs and concept. The quality, precision, patience, knowledge, passion and devotion makes Matt’s work on an extraordinary level. If you have a precious horn on your hands, Matthew is the right person to take care of it. I highly recommend his work to everybody, amators or professionals. He will give you an extra joy in playng your beloved saxophone.

Jay Corder - Back in Super Action

About thirty some years ago I bought a 1951 super action tenor from Jack Silver, owner of Tangelwood Music, in Silver Spring, Md. The sax was barely playable, it had very little lacquer left on it and looked pretty sad. Jack told me he had other horns that were in much better shape but there was just about this sax that I really can’t explain. I wanted it, So I bought it.

Over the years I thought about getting it repaired but for some reason I never did. Last year I started hearing great things about Matt Stohrer. I called him and told him about the Super Action. He sounded quite confident that he could get it back in shape so I sent it to him.

I just got it back yesterday, I played it for about an hour before I called Matt. It was like playing a new Selmer from the early 50’s. Matt had to do much more work on this sax than a normal overhaul would have taken. He spent many hours doing serious surgery on the sax, so, thanks Matt for your care and dedication to your craft. You are truly a Master.

Bill Smart - Dedication Personified

They call it “Doing one thing Well.” If you are good enough people will say it for you. That’s exactly where I am with Matt’s grasp on his profession. Should you have an exceptional Saxophone that deserves the best professional attention, then he’s your guy !!

Des Deane - Great sax and fabulous work by Matt

Having bought a saxaphone that Matt Stohrer had worked on, I knew that someday I would have Matt do some work on other saxes. In the ensuing months it seemed I kept hearing great things about Matt. The opportunity to have Matt work on a horn arose when he had a fine Conn Transitional Alto that he would be reworking. I knew that this was my opportunity to hear a Conn at its best, since I was confident that Matt’s work would be unbeaten.

When I received the Conn it was even better than I had expected or even hoped - and it exceeded Matt’s description. It is a fantastic rebuild, preserving the original finish of a little used horn.

As for playing, everything was perfect. Great sealing and regulation, just a great playing horn.

Being a perfectionist and in business myself, I have had the opportunity to speak with Matt about our respective principles in business. I rarely meet a purist such as myself, who places his work quality first, resisting the temptation to measure his work solely by the money and glory it brings in. Matt is this way, which is an additional reason why I am proud to own this beautiful Conn.

Thank you, Matt, for a glorious saxaphone and for being an example of “doing things the right way”.

Cameron Davis - yamaha 82z custom

After purchasing a “New in box” tenor from a large online retailer, NOT WWBW, but another Yamaha authorized dealer I was left very disappointed with the horn. This is my first tenor. After learning the horn a little, I felt there was a lot left to be desired. I contacted Matt to have him look at the horn. Matt received the horn, evaluated it, promptly contacted me to discuss options, then we decided on the best POA. Matt stayed in contact throughout the repair process, which was more substantial than one would think for a new Yamaha, explaining his process/reasoning etc. Roughly 2 weeks later I had my horn in my hand again. WOW. I was immediatley impressed before I blew the first note. The action felt solid, slick, and even. Think like an “on-off” switch. My horn now plays efffortlessly from bottom to top, intonation is great, every note is full sounding, and altissimo speaks cleanly. Everything I expected, but didn’t receive, from a Yamaha.

Bottom line is Matt is a true craftsman and is the empitome of integrity. I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of my horn. It was a true breath of fresh air dealing with Matt.

Joe Turano - Selmer BA Alto resurrected

I purchased an early Balanced Action Alto off eBay a while back and knew it would need some work to get back to playing condition, but didn’t realize the extent of the wear. Great tone and intonation, so I kept it and had it overhauled per usual, thinking I’d be all set. But it still didn’t feel right when I got it back, and that’s when I began thinking seriously about contacting Matt. I’d been following his work for some time and it was obvious that he had a great appreciation for these older instruments. He got the horn and initially it seemed like the work needed to get it in shape would be fairly minimal, but when he took it apart it was obvious that the wear was extensive. Someone had played the hell out of this horn. After discussing it with Matt I decided to go for it. We both thought that perhaps the reason for all that wear - besides sheer age and improper maintenance - could well be that it was simply a great little horn that someone flat out loved to play. When I picked up the horn after a complete, meticulous mechanical rebuild I was blown away. It has exceeded my expectations. I would unreservedly recommend Matt’s work to anyone. His honesty, sense of craftsmanship, skill and work ethic are on the highest level.

Greg Steeden - Conn 26M

My dealings with Matt have been 1st class. I purchased a 26M from him with an overhaul included. His communication was great and he clear outlined timeframes for the work to be completed. I live in Australia and after just a few messages, found Matt to be passionate about his work and quickly realised I was dealing with a person of integrity. I trusted him with my hard earned cash and he delivered more than I could have hoped for. I would not hesitate to business Matt. He takes enormous pride in his work. My 26M is evidence of that. It is an outstanding sax setup up by the best.

He packaging was excellent and the sax arrived safely. Don’t hesitate to work with Matt. you won’t regret it!!

Erik Riggs - ‘54 Selmer MKVI Tenor

I was fortunate to have Matt rebuild my #56k Mark VI Tenor in June of 2012. The horn had a wonderful body of sound, but the action was slow and clunky after 60 years of playing and left a lot to be desired in projection. Playing my instrument after Matt’s overhaul was nothing short of a revelation! I had no idea how much compensating I was doing while playing. The action was now tight, fast, silent, and light. The horn easily has fifteen percent more projection now! After (literally) traveling around the world with me four or five times, and TONS of hours of playing, my tenor is just as amazing as the day I picked it up from Matt’s shop. Every single sax player who tries it cannot believe that a MKVI can be THAT good! Beyond his incredible craftsmanship, Matt Stohrer is also a person of high integrity…something that is sadly lacking in many “pro” sax shops these days. Highest possible recommendation!!

Anna Durmuller - Great Buffet SDA

I bought a 1971 Buffet SDA tenor sax from Matt in July 2013 without knowing anything about this guy. It’s always a bit of a risk to buy a horn over the internet, but Matt’s description of the horn turned out to be totally accurate. Matt also made a sound clip for me which was helfpul. The horn arrived expertly wrapped and in flawless condition and meets all my expectations of a great SDA. It plays beautifully and I love it! Thanks again, Matt!

William Bua - 1940 Balanced overhaul

I can’t give high enough marks for Matt’s overhaul on my dream horn, a 1940 Selmer Balanced Action Tenor. It is an all original horn and very worthy of the best overhaul money can buy. As a 5 year tech, I know that my ability wasn’t enough to guarantee perfection from this horn and I trusted Matt to do the build and boy am I glad I did. He took a nearly perfect saxophone and turned it into a monster. When the pads close, it feels like an on/off button. No hesitation in tone or pitch. Matt’s craftsmanship is unmatched. Not even the slightest detail is left to chance. This is the best playing horn I have played. Matt is truly a master technician and must be considered amongst the best techs in the country. If you are seeking perfection from your horn, Matt Stohrer is the man to give it to you.

Bryan Murray - Highly Recommended!!!

I can’t say enough about the two horns I’ve gotten from Matt. Both are 1930s Conn Transitionals and are amazing!!! When I got them from Matt they looked brand new. Unbelievable!! And they play and sound beautiful. This guy does outstanding work :)

Aaron Lohmeyer - Still loving my overhauled Mark VI 5 years later

I just took my Mark VI in for a its FIRST checkup 5 years after your overhaul. The two techs there were shocked that it had been 5 years. The pads were grimy, but still sealing and the keys are still pretty quiet. No tech visits in 5 years and I’m picky. That’s impressive.

Ian Tordella (San Diego, CA) - Mark Six Tenor

I sent Matt a challenging Mark VI overhaul and I couldn’t be more pleased with his work.

I’ve seen (and played) great work by several other top-shelf repairmen on both coasts, and Matt’s standards meet or exceed all of them. The key-fitting on my horn is as tight and perfect as a brand-new Yamaha or better. The spring job (and the pad job) is the best and most consistent I’ve played. My Mark VI really feels like a brand new instrument, as opposed to a perfectly restored vintage one.

I went into the overhaul expecting to pay a high-price for the best quality work, but at the end I found his rates to be quite reasonable. I have been gigging on the tenor almost daily for about a month now and it is a complete joy to play.

Estoppey Laurent - Great job on Rampone-Cazzani!

A little more than one month ago, I needed my horns (soprano and alto) to be adjusted, right before a tour. Both haven’t been adjusted for a while and the alto even fell down on the sidewalk, hopefully in the case, but was slightly damaged.

I’ve heard some very goods comments about Matt’s work earlier and I confess, I was curious to meet him and to discuss with him about my Rampone-Cazzani saxophones.

I play their soprano for about fifteen years, the tenor and bari for about ten years and I switched my alto from Buffet-crampon Prestige to Rampone three years ago.

After the small polemic around Rampone after the article Matt posted on his blog, I wanted to know more about his position, but also about my horns.

Matt did a great job, totally respecting the philosophy of these particular but fantastic instruments.

He made them very balanced, the key response accurate and comfortable.

It was a great pleasure to play the horns again after his work, thanks Matt !

Vicki Walker - Thumbs Way Up!!!

I wanted to post a hearty endorsement and thank you to Matt Stohrer. I have purchased two P. Mauriat horns from Matt, a PMXT 66RCL tenor and a PMXA 67RS alto. They arrived on schedule, very well packed and subperbly set up, and they are both great saxophones. I should add that I am a new, late-blooming but very enthusiastic player, and I found Matt to be exceptionally friendly, helpful and responsive to my emails and questions. Matt recently overhauled another horn for me, a PMST 60NS tenor, which I purchased used elsewhere. It was gummy, sticky, clicky, yucky and very hard to play before he worked his magic on it. When I got it back, I did not recognize it as the same instrument. It is responsive, free blowing all the way up and down, and sounds and looks just beautiful. I am so glad to know about him and I highly recommend him as an honest, extremely knowledgable, talented, personable technician (magician!) who is a real pleasure to do business with. Thank you, Matt!

Scott Drewery - Thank you !!

I would like to give a heartfelt and sincere " Thank you " to Matt Stohrer for the mechanical overhaul he performed on my Selmer SBA alto. I had originally contacted Matt about playing a P. Mauriat alto. I was unhappy with the way the SBA was playing and was in the market for a new horn. Matt let me play test the P. Mauriat and evaluated the SBA for me. Matt explained that many of the problems I had with the horn were due to mechanical issues. I had had re-pads and other work done on this horn in the past, but intonation and other issues still remained. Matt was able to recognize and understand what the real problems were, and explain them to me. I’d always loved this horn’s sound and tone. Matt was able able to breath new life into a horn I was ready to give up on. I have never played a horn that plays so well, or so easy ! I am thoroughly satisfied and grateful for my experience with Matt.

Jeff Todd - Kudos to Matt Stohrer!

I’d like to give a shout out to Matt Stohrer, saxophone repair specialist. I am very, some would perhaps say extremely, picky when it comes to my horns, and have always gone out of my way to find the best technicians available to overhaul them. I began my collaboration with Matt in summer of 2011, and he has now overhauled 3 of my horns, and is now working on the 4th.

Matt’s overhauls are the best, most problem-free overhauls I have ever had, with the possible exception of an old master in the Lexington, KY area named “Clyde”, who overhauled my Selmer Mk VI when I was in college. That overhaul lasted several years without a single trip to a repairman. I haven’t had any of Matt’s overhauls that long, so the jury will be out until I have.

Back to Matt. Upon receiving my horns back from overhauls, I usually find several things that are not quite right, which I then have to take up with the repair tech. This has been the case even with businesses reputed by some as being among the very best in the world.

Try as I might, it has been difficult to find fault with Matt’s work. On two of these overhauls, I haven’t been able to find a single flaw in adjustment, padwork, or anything else. On the third, I may have found one flaw in the octave key adjustment, but I’m not sure yet. So Matt promises top-shelf craftsmanship, and delivers on that promise. It’s safe to say that many of his competitors do not.

You can’t offer this kind of service without understanding what the client’s wants and needs are, and Matt will spend as much time as is necessary discussing the repair work to be done with his clients. I have never felt rushed or importunate when discussing repair work with Matt. He takes the time to understand.

Matt is eager to learn, but he also has a lot of confidence in the expertise he has acquired and the methods he has developed. All this means that he approaches your work with a definite point of view, and is very articulate about his views. Consequently, he won’t just say “yea and amen” to any request. If he feels that an approach is not the best for your instrument, he will tell you. A few people might then choose to go elsewhere, but I for one am happy to have access to such a forthright, honest, and articulate repairman.

I have just used the words “forthright” and “honest”: these qualities extend also to money matters. Matt’s communication on pricing is always clear and unambiguous. That is so refreshing! I can’t tell you how frustrating it is to deal with a repair shop that doesn’t conclude its deals clearly and cleanly.

My advice to Matt is simply this: keep on providing uncompromising quality, never get complacent, never think you know everything, and always listen to your customers. That last injunction is extremely important. Wherever I have seen repairmen dismiss the concerns of competent players, it has been the sign of decline.

David Giammona - Selmer Mark VI Repair

My sax rocks! I just played it at the Nationals Stadium for the Night of Hope event, I will tell you I was the envy of all the horn players and the band. Your work is better than fantastic, it plays better than when I bought it new. Please don’t ever stop working on saxes, you are a master craftsman.

Andrew Benzmiller - Expertise with integrity

I recently bought the purple label Yamaha YTS-62 that Matt had listed for sale here. Over the course of many emails and phone conversations, Matt spent probably hours discussing my preferences and educating me on what to expect. Not to mention the many hours he spent working on the horn itself. The process ended up becoming a bit more involved than Matt probably expected, but throughout it all, he was beyond professional. He clearly stands behind his work and his word, no matter what. As a beginning player, and especially making a fairly significant purchase sight unseen, I can’t overstate the value of Matt’s integrity.

And as for the sax itself: it’s wonderful. Just as Matt promised. The action is smooth and silent, yet still light and springy. Now that I’ve settled on the right mouthpiece for me, this horn as the deep, rich tone I was hoping for.

So thanks Matt, and to anyone reading this and wondering about undertaking an expensive purchase or repair from a distance, I’d say you can trust Matt implicitly. Give him a call and you’ll see.

Mario Malette - Soprano YSS62, Amazing Job!

I had the chance to have my soprano Yamaha Purple Lable 62 repadded by Matt in December 2011.

The work would have been done in Montreal Longeuil, but when I made a trade with a guy in NY ,he highly recommended Matt Stohrer to do the work on it!

When I got my soprano, from first blow I was amazed by Matt s work! Also Matt was just great with communications,as e mails were replyed the very same day!

My soprano plays like a dream!

Again Matt ,I can t thank you enough!

All the best from Ontario Canada,

John Thornby - Greatly appreciate the work

I was in the constant hunt for the perfect horn. In that effort I purchased 6 modern professional horns from varied sources (I still have them all). Although they were all fine horns - none of them seemed perfect (For various reasons).

I was about to head down the “vintage” path when I decided to try “perfecting” a horn I already had after hearing about overhauls and uberhauls etc etc.

So I contacted Matt and talked about his approach to overhauling horns and setting them up. He and I had very similar desires from the setup of a horn. I decided to give it and Matt a shot.

When I received the horn back from Matt it was absolutely “PERFECT.” It is the horn I had been trying to purchase. I have tried HARD to find something I do not like about the setup, but I can’t.

I am no longer searching for a “better” horn, but rather, perfecting the ones I have.

I am scheduling my other horns with Matt at this time. It is much much cheaper to “perfect” a horn than to keep looking for that elusive “perfect” horn.

Phil Leung - A great technician who put his heart into his work!!!!

I recently purchased a Conn 6m Tranny from Matt and it is absolutely stunning!!!!! The horn is professionally packed, and the rebuild/overhaul is extremely impressive!!!! The pads are set up perfectly, key work actions are lighting fast and the horn is exactly as he described!!! I’m also very impressed by his willingness to communicate and understand his customer’s need.

I highly recommend Matt. He is a great technician who put his heart into his work!!

Scott Engle - Excellent Service!

I ordered a Bam bari case from Matt recently and Matt’s customer service was excellet. His communication throughout the ordering/shipping process was top notch and the price was good. Kudos to Matt!

Lonnie Duvall - A Sax Reborn!

I recently picked up my YTS61 after an overhaul from Matt Stohrer. I bought this horn used from a pawn shop about 22+ years ago and had it overhauled at a large music store in Houston, Texas; at the time a primo shop used by musicians from all over the country. They did a beautiful job and I’ve loved this horn ever since. This sax has seen TONS of use. Over time, I’ve had lots of small adjustments done and a pad replaced here and there. But in recent years it had developed a pretty bad case of “key slop” and was too loose and leaky to get good tone all up and down the horn. I had almost stopped playing it completely and my Keilwerth SX90R became my primary instrument.

To keep it brief and to the point, Matt Stohrer resurrected this horn. I mean he brought it back to life! I sincerely believe the horn is more playable and more delightful to play than it was when I first got it back from the shop 22+ years ago (and I thought it was AMAZING then). The action is solid and incredibly responsive. Intonation is spot-on. I can “whisper” on the low end and crack glass on the high end with an ease I have never experienced with this horn. I’m in my sixties now and will probably be playing this horn until I show up for the Last Big Gig.

Matt Stohrer is a technician par excellence. This young man knows saxophones and now works solely on saxes. He is also a talented player and gets what a player wants from a horn. He spent time with me talking about the horn, my style of playing, particular issues I was having with the horn, and the sound I’m going for when I pick up a sax. He delivered big time on everything we discussed. Matt Stohrer is also a delightful human being, a good listener, an astute and honest business person, and just an all around good guy. I would strongly recommend him to anyone who wants work done on a sax. He is the ONLY tech I’ll be using to work on my horns.

Matt now has my Keilwerth SX90R tenor and I can’t wait to see, feel, and hear what he will do with it. Thanks, Matt!

Jon Luthro - The Spring

I recently bought a P. Mauriat PMXT 66rul from Matt Stohrer Music.

The horn played superbly from the very first note. Much of this is due to Matt’s special set-up that each horn goes through before it’s shipped to the customer.

There was nothing wrong with the horn, but I wanted a certain spring tighter than it was set.

Matt actually got on the phone with the same model horn in front of him and walked me through exactly how to do it on my own horn.

His communication skills are expert and he was able to walk me through it precisely. I’m new at this and he even started by naming all the parts that we’d be working with.

The spring is now perfect. I felt a real sense of accomplishment and satisfaction that I was able to do it ‘myself.’

Thanks a lot Matt, for taking interest and time that my horn should be exactly as I want it.

john stinchfield - SIMPLY THE BEST !!

I’m a novice player ,new to the sax community. Matt dealt with me as if I were a seasoned and famous pro.

I have a 1929 buescher TT alto that was unplayable. Matt did a complete overhaul. He did it on time ,at the quoted price with safe delivery .

He was recommended to me by a SOTW world class buescher expert as THE person in the states he would trust with his own beloved TH&C.

My alto came back in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition. It plays spot on with a light and fast action.

As an anal retentive expert in my own mechanical field, I really can appreciate Matt’s craftsmanship and attention to detail. He won"t return your horn until it meets his exacting standards.

I have found my lifelong tech. I’m sure you will be as pleased as i was.

Matt Marantz - Matt Stohrer: Pro Saxophone Repairman

I got to know Matt Stohrer in NYC when he was working at the Sam Ash shop in mid-town Manhattan as the head saxophone/woodwind repairman. He has since relocated, but after getting to know Matt’s saxophone repair work I was glad to have found a straight-forward, honest musical instrument repair person in NYC that could do pro-quality work on my horns whenever they needed a new pad, felt, or key adjustment. In fact, Matt re-padded about half of the keys on my Keilwerth tenor sax (which is the horn I use for everything I do) about 3 years ago and he did a really great job of seating the pads so that they seal up really well. Matt is also a really nice cat who digs music and he really seems to love what he does - Those are ingredients for a recipe for success in the field of musical instrument repair. I’m really glad to see that Matt has his own saxophone repair business going for himself now, and I would definitely recommend his work to people looking for professional-quality saxophone adjustments and repairs for horns of any vintage - old or new.

Randy Mills - Matt Stohrer; ‘Atelier Extraordinaire’

In a nut shell, Matt is professional and straight forward. I took him my tenor with some issues that needed to be addressed. Matt assessed the situation, gave me my options, and what the result of each would be. He covered options from re-pad all the way to minor adjustments. We decided on a solution that fit my budget. Then we talked about my mouthpiece. He agreed to work on the facing and the baffle.

I got my horn and mouthpiece back from him in a timely manner; exactly when he said it would be done. It blows free and powerful from tip to bell. There is no way I can explain everything about the work he did. However, my tenor really sings with ease. The mouthpiece work is amazing too! He achieved exactly what I asked for.

I highly recommend Matt!

Stuart Bogie - Stohrer

Matt Stohrer is a great saxophone repairman. I have known him for several years and worked with him regularly before he left NYC. We miss him dearly! He was always clear and accurate about the issues he saw, the time needed to address them, and the results you could expect. He knows so much about woodwind instruments its ridiculous, i would trust him with any and all surgery on either my vintage King or my Mark 6, he knows horns and will hook them up! Not to mention, he is a pleasure to know and quick to give friendly advice when shopping for horns on ebay, etc. I highly recommend him.

Steve Hollahan - Stohrer Music

Matt has helped me develop my repair skills by advising and checking my work. Matt Stohrer is an incredible tech and all around nice guy. If you need info, repair or equipment, I highly recommend his work and products.

Thanks for all the help Matt!

Logan Richardson - The Woodwind Kitchen

I can honestly say that when you are stepping into a situation where you are having Matt Stohrer do any service to you saxophone, you are dealing with the best. Matt is someone who loves the saxophone, and is quite the fanatic when it comes to this subject. I am a professional, world traveling musician- as well as I professionally repair saxophones. I will tell you one thing- Matt is the only person I will allow to work on my horn- he has an ability to tap into the unknown and give you a synopsis as if it were documented from 60 years before. Matt, is the top chef and proprietor of what I like to call the woodwind kitchen. He can take anything…and I mean anything and turn it into a masterpiece…so…I agree with other posts, NYC losing Matt was huge, and it will be a long time before that city or any city finds a technician with the love, passion, and knowledge that it takes to really be able to identify, problem solve, and repair a horn to the precision in which Matt has perfected. Simply the best! Thank you Matt….

Dylan Heaney - NY’s loss is NC’s gain

I was referred to Matt after already living in New York City for a few years, and really wish I would have found him sooner. Luckily, I caught up with him in time to have him do a few repair jobs for me before he moved south.

In my experience, I was immediately impressed with his attention to detail, his transparency in describing what repairs were needed and his suggested methods or repair, and his high level of technical knowledge about all types of saxophones (and mouthpieces too). I look for a honest, no-frills guy when it comes to horn repair, and that’s what I got with Matt.

But in addition to his technical knowledge, he also is a craftsman and a innovator who values not only time-tested methods, but also newer products that can improve the longevity of repair work. Some repair guys go too far with this, but Matt’s sole purpose is make the horn play the best it is capable of playing. I don’t need re-designed keys and gadgets, but I sure would love my felts and corks to last longer and the oil on the horn to not get bunged up and sticky. His attention to these types of details make his repairs even that much better.

To top it off, he’s a really nice guy and comfortable to work with on a personal level. So if you need your saxophone repaired, Stohrer Music is where you wanna go!

Jonathan Carbonaro - Simply Amazing

In late December early January I purchased a 1920 era Conn Stencil Soprano from Kritavi. I got a few pictures from Kritavi before I purchased the horn. But I knew that it required a full overhaul. So I talked to Matt, and had the horn sent to him. It was my first time getting a full overhaul on a horn. I have nothing but positive things to say about the whole situation. Their were many instances in this deal, because of different complications that came up for the deal to fall apart. But everything went smoothly from purchase to getting the horn in my hands.

A Full overhaul was done on the horn. When I first saw the horn from pictures, all I saw was potential. It was covered in Tarnish, so I was unsure of the amount of plating that the horn had. I was also unsure of the mechanical condition of the horn, or how much work would be required to get it playing again. This hands down is probably one of the finest looking horns I have had the opportunity to play. And that is thanks to Matt’s restoration work on it.

When it Got here, the horn was extremely well packed. Corks were placed so that the keys wouldn’t move. Honestly this was the best packing job I had ever seen on an instrument. Something I was not expecting which I should of was the amount of air it takes to play the horn. I have owned a modern soprano and I could half ass the air going into the horn on my previous soprano. On this horn you can’t do it. Which is nice, and the keys. I feel the layout on a vintage alto/tenor is just different then that of the soprano. More clarinet like with the key height set up. Again not bad but something that takes some getting used to.

When it was time for me to pay for the work, I didn’t have a way to complete the paperwork that Sam Ash requires. I ended up pay-paling the money to him, for all the work + taxes+ a new case and shipping. So he had the horn and the money. This is not something I would usually doing. But I decided to go ahead with it because of his reputation on the forum. And he ended up refunding about $20 because of overestimation of shipping cost. To me this speaks volumes about his Morales and ethics. Because he could of very easily pocketed the $20 and I would of never known.

This by far is the finest soprano I have ever had the opportunity to play, and I am very happy with this purchase. I currently have a Martin Committee that when its time for it to be overhauled I’ll be sending to Matt, regardless of where I am in the world. Because of how this deal went down. My only regret is not sending other horns to him sooner to get work done.

Thanks for a great horn, and I will defiantly be doing business with you again.

Vito Dieterle - Simply The Best

Matt is simply the best. He has proven it time and time again. I’ve been playing saxophone and getting my horn worked on for more than 20 some years now, and never have I experienced such fine and lasting work. His attention to detail, his patience, he’s sensitivity, his obvious burning passion for what he does has left a huge wake of satisfied costumers. I am a New Yorker. New York, the land of instant gratification, the land of convenience. New York, where you can get a snickers bar delivered to your doorstep at 3 AM from your local deli if you really want to. The land crawling with repair techs on every corner inorder to accomodate the thousands of players that need servicing. And believe me I’ve been to them all. But when the time comes, I will indeed wrap up my horn with out hesitation and ship it off to Matt when I need my next overhaul. Because it’s simply worth all that freaking trouble, and even the wait. He’s just set the bar far too high to deny it. My only complaint is that he left NYC. He is sorely missed. Vito Dieterle

Matthew Silberman - A good friend, & great/honest tech

Matt and I have been friends and colleagues for a number of years now. I met him when he first started working at Sam Ash in NYC, where I was working at the time right after finishing college. He’s always been a friendly, funny, laid-back guy, and we were cool with each other right away.

He got his sax tech skills together in the most scrutinizing environment, NYC’s 48th st, and thrived. I quickly noticed he had an attention to detail and a want to make sure everything was “right” on the horn that was unfortunately rare in many top sax techs. In addition, he has always been honest and straightforward, which is another unfortunately and surprisingly rare commodity in this business.

Matt overhauled my SBA tenor to great effect, and when he was in NYC he was the only tech I was trusting my equipment with.

I highly recommend him for any of your saxophone needs. You’ll always get friendly, honest service, and high-quality saxophone repair.

David - Super Sax Man!

I’ve called Matt Stohrer my “sax adviser” for the passed year or so. I contacted him out of the blue for advice about buying my first sax when he was local in Brooklyn, and only a few months later, after following his advice, he was in my studio inspecting two vintage tenors I was testing - the better of which I bought and am absurdly happy with. (Mind you, he had no personal investment in the purchase). Whether you’re a novice or a pro (that same week there was a sax legend playing in the Big Apple that Matt was also doing work for), Matt will be there for you from beginning to end. This guy knows his stuff and will follow through. I recently bought an alto that needs care, and I wouldn’t think of sending it to anyone but Matt. If there were a comic book about a superhero sax repairman with integrity, bionic skills, and an uncanny ability to save your ax, it would be based on Matt Stohrer.

MN - Top Notch in Every Way!

I’m the proud owner of a MK VI alto that was overhauled by Matt and I can’t begin to tell you what a joy the instrument is to play. His attention to detail, and dogged pursuit of excellence is a breath of fresh air, especially when mediocrity has become more the norm instead of the exception. His work will not be the least expensive, but the results he will deliver is worth every penny. To have a horn that you simply don’t want to put down is nearly priceless. If you are really interested in knowing just how good your horn can be, don’t hesitate - send it to Matt and let him bring your horn to life. You won’t regret it.

TJ - Matt is the best in the biz

Matt Stohrer is the best in the saxophone repair business. That is a big statement. So here’s the reasons why I believe it’s true. When you hire someone to service your most valued possessions like your car, house, and in Matt’s case your saxophone, you’d would certainly hope to have that person do the right thing. You would want that person to have honestly and integrity. You’d want a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. You’d want them to go the extra steps to get the job done to perfection. You’d want constant communication about the progress of the job. You’d want to be listened to and have your desires addressed. And most of all, you’d want someone you can trust. Matt excels in all these areas. Plus, he really knows how to get your sax to play better than ever.

I’ve had the pleasure of owning several horns that Matt has overhauled. Each one played at it’s utmost potential and the quality of the work is exceptional. He’ll treat you and your sax very well indeed.

Rory Leitch - Matt Stohrer is awesome!

This is perhaps not news to many on SotW, but I just wanted to post a note telling everybody just how great I think Matt Stohrer is.

I lucked into a silver Conn Connqueror alto last year, which I eventually traded with Matt for some cash, a vintage mouthpiece, and a Martin Dick Stabile tenor. The tenor had been recently repadded, but not by Matt, and so he said that if there were any problems he’d take care of it.

Well, to make a long story short, I wasn’t crazy about the set up, so Matt offered to do a complete repad. All I had to do was ship the horn back to him, and he took care of the rest. I got the sax back a couple of days ago, and I’m just blown away by the quality of the work he did: practically a complete overhaul, and meticulously done. The sax was nice before, but now it’s just fantastic. I honestly can’t believe I now own this suberbly restored vintage instrument.

The extraordinary integrity that Matt demonstrated in standing behind this horn–and remember he got no cash from me–is a big part of the story, but it’s not all of it. The second thing I want to mention is that, at every single point in our dealings, Matt treated me like I was a top level pro player, right down to making sure that the work did not interfere with my schedule. This felt strange–I’m a rank amateur and have no gigs to speak of–but I also can’t tell you how much I appreciated it.

Anyway, I’m sure there are lots of great techs out there who do the same kinds of things, but I just wanted everybody to know what a first class tech/dealer this guy is: I was ridiculously lucky to score the Connqueror, but that’s really nothing compared to the good fortune I had in doing business with Matt.

Andy Farber - Matt Stohrer is the cat to see

When my favourite repairman left NYC back in 2000, I thought I’d never find anyone as good. For several years I had little bits of work done on all of my axes from many different techs, but when I brought my horns to Matt Stohrer, I knew he was the new cat. I’m sorry that he’s not in NYC anymore to do regular maintenance on may horns, but whenever I need my next overhaul, it’s going south to see Matt.

Matt is the best kind of saxophone repairman because he’s a musician. He also has a critical eye for this type of work and is always conscientious and thorough. I’m recommending Matt to all of my students and colleagues for overhauls and other major work.

Sam Sadigursky - Give your horns to Matt!

Matt has worked on and overhauled on numerous horns of mine over the years, and I’ve sent countless students to him as well. In addition to being a master of his craft, he is also patient, honest, generous with his knowledge, and always willing to listen to his clients. I learned so much by going to him for repair, and had many interesting discussions with him.

The overhauls he has done for me have stood up to rigorous playing and traveling. He’s always worked with me to get each horn exactly where I would like it, and it’s stayed that way.

His mouthpieces are excellent too. They really sing and have something very unique to them, and are very easy to play as well. Check out the YouTube clip of me testing one of them, which was made minutes after throwing a random reed on one of his pieces, not having played a metal mouthpiece in years in fact!

Nothing leaves his shop until it meets Matt’s high standards… I’m really excited to see where he goes with this venture and whatever other directions he takes going forward.

Despite the fact that Matt is no longer in NYC, I will definitely be sending him work in the future, trusting that whatever he sends back to me will be given the top level of precision and care.

Brian - All-around great!

The first thing to say about Matt is that his work is kind of addictive. Once you get a horn repadded by Matt, you may not be able to go anywhere else. I have had horns repadded by many of the top shops in the country, and Matt’s work is easily on par with any of the best techs out there. He’s currently doing his 11th overhaul for me with a few more waiting in line. These include my personal soprano, alto and tenor.

Much has been said already, but here are 5 major pluses of working with Matt:

  1. Scrupulous honesty. He will tell you exactly what your horn needs and why. There is no mystery to working with Matt. You learn a lot about repair yourself in the process, actually (if you want to). And he takes a YAS-23 as seriously as he does on a mint Mark VI.

  2. Meticulous attention to detail. It is extremely important to Matt that a horn be RIGHT. This often means that what you thought was a pretty good horn before he worked on it, turns out to be an amazing horn that was only playing at 60% of its potential before.

  3. ‘The last 20%’ I think that many many players have never experienced the last 20% of little details about their horn being right. With many techs out there, (at least based on several-hundred horns that I have seen come in) the job seems to be done when the pads are all sealing. Matt’s work shows how far the job is from actually done at this point. In many cases, his work makes the difference between a dead horn that you thought was just a lemon, and a horn that has come alive and resonates the way it was originally intended to. The bad side of it is that once you experience this last 20% on your horn (and yes, it is actually 20%, not just 5%), you will be spoiled, and you won’t be able to go back.

  4. Work that lasts: If Matt does a full mechanical overhaul on your horn, it will be so perfect when it is done, that you may not need to do anything to it for a long long time. Typically, it will be more mechanically perfect than when it was new. Everything lines up perfectly, everything fits perfectly, the spring tensions are all exactly the same, pads all seal perfectly and evenly, neck receiver has to be greased because the neck fits perfectly etc. This also means, by the way, that if you play a lot, you really save a lot of time, money, and worry getting your gigging horn overhauled by Matt. As long as you treat it well, it’s almost definitely not going to pick up random leaks and unexpected problems when you’re on the road.

  5. Wide and deep knowledge of unusual horns. Lots of guys have repadded a score of Selmers. But how many know how to make a Keilwerth New King play its best? Or an SML, or a Buffet? Matt has spent a lot of time learning about the less common vintage horns. He is a real specialist in anything “weird” and he takes time to come up with the right techniques for the particular horn he is working on, rather than treating everything like it is a Selmer or a Yamaha. As a quick example, I have played a The Martin Alto that Matt repadded, and amazingly, the LH pinky cluster–the one that so many people modify because it feels weird–felt like butter; just effortless, and not all friction-y like it often is. Same thing with the complex mechanism on a Conn 26M or 30M. Many techs hate working on these because they’re “not like a Selmer” but this is where Matt’s capabilities set themselves apart as being in the very top class of saxophone specialists.

My only worry is that after giving Matt such a ringing endorsement, I’m going to have to wait longer to get my horns back from him!

Mark Madden - Perfect Execution

Matt’s repair work is 2nd to none and his patience in explaining what needs to be done, when, and why is extraordinary.

I’m particularly picky about the playing condition and appearance of my horns. He’s worked on 6 of my horns and every time it has come back to me in the best condition it’s ever been. I have also sent him 2 worn-out mangled wrecks of instruments and he has brought them back to life, playing better than they did when they left the factory 60+ years ago.

Matt is my go-to guy for saxophone repairs – particularly if you want it to be as perfect as it can get!
